A Space to Create
Now that the weather is turning cold and our beach adventures have become drive-bys I’m feeling the need to replace that afternoon go-to with something. And as we look ahead to shorter days and more time spent indoors, more than ever I long for a creative space to escape to.
I had looked at the finished room in the basement as a possibility. It seems ideal— filled with afternoon light, a quiet retreat from the activity that’s to be expected with four humans and two canines living under the same roof. The drawback? It’s crowded with exercise equipment that nobody ever uses, and you have to walk through a cluttered basement to get there.
Determined to overlook the obstacles, I started to fix the room up up as a space where I could explore creative projects, get messy, and not be in anyone’s way. I got as far as hauling my old desk in there and filling it with art supplies. But I was uninspired. So, I turned my attention outdoors and satisfied my need to create in the garden. And that kept me occupied all summer and into the fall.
And now it was time to revisit the “studio” space. I gave it another go and this time I filled the walls with paintings, weavings, drawings, and collages—all the finished projects that before now had not found a place in our new home.
And just like that I’m inspired to create in this wonderful space with my back to the dusty exercise equipment!
