A Leap of Faith
In the summer of 2022 my husband and I let go of 80% of our possessions and said goodbye to the home that we’d loved for 27 years. We moved to a town we knew very little about, into a living situation that had a 50 percent chance of failure. What we did is not for everyone, and honestly I know that only a few of our close friends could wrap their heads around our decision. The reactions of some were downright hurtful, something that to this day I have a difficult time understanding.
A Leap of Faith is the condensed version of our story. It’s a story about how we accepted an offer from our adult son and his soon-to-be wife to share a home with them. We were flattered by the offer and giddy at the prospect of living in a beautiful home in a desirable town. So, in the space of less than 24 hours and without much consideration to logistics or consequences, we took a huge leap of faith and said “YES!”.
What followed was roughly a year of roller coaster emotions ranging from feeling that “We’re the luckiest people of all our friends” to “We’ve just made the biggest mistake of our lives”. I journaled my way through the incidents that triggered this range of emotions and it’s from those early morning musings that I draw the story I’m here to tell. Sometimes raw, always authentic, I trust that the characters within know that I love them and will not take offense.
I’m ready to share my story now because after all the bumps and hiccups, tears and fears I can honestly say that taking this leap of faith was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
